Reef Fishing

The number one way to go fishing in Key West and bring home the best eating food fish year round is Reef fishing. A super exciting way to go fishing in Key West. A versatile fishing charter that offers light tackle fishing for many different species of fish that live on our vast coral reefs. Fun for all experience levels and a great bucket list trip.

There are many reefs near Key West but our barrier reef that separates the depths of the Atlantic Ocean from the shallows of the Florida Keys is where we conduct and focus our reef fishing. This barrier reef off of Key West is the same reef that runs all the way to Miami. All part of a 150 mile long shallow breakwater underwater eco system of life. Just 5 miles is the closest our reef gets to Key West but over 80 miles of it is the range we fish on our reef fishing charters.

What Do We Fish For On The Reef

The reef holds the largest number of different species to fish for than any other area that our fishing charters in Key West have to offer. Most of those species are edible. Such as 4 species of grouper, 4 species of snapper, 3 species of mackerel, 5 species of jacks including permit, blackfin tunas, cobia and occasionally mahi mahi. Now thats - versatility. Depending on the fishing seasons any numer of these fish can be available. See our Key West Fishing Seasons page.

Reef Fishing Charters

The charters are conducted on a boat that consists of a boat, captain and no mate. Distances traveled can range from 5 to 55 miles away from Key West depending on the length of the trip, what species an angler would like to pursue and how far they would like to go to get them. These details will be discussed at time of booking. Trips are private fishing charters for up to 6 persons or less with time lines of 4, 6 and 8 hours in length. The 4 and 6 hour trips will depart in the morning around 7:30 or in the afternoon at 1 or 2 pm. Full day trips are a little bit more customizable for departure times as they take up the full day and we cannot book another trip on it..

Reef fishing can lend itself to being a rougher water sport. If seasickness is a common thread in your boating. Consider medicating or chosing a different trip.. Read our F.A.Q. section on how to prepare for seasick potential and still have a great time on your fishing charter.

The Boats We Use For Reef Fishing

Yellowfin 36 Ft Center Console Reef Fishing BoatCenter Consoles are extremly versatile boats. 27 - 36 ft in length and powered by two or three outboards. Center consoles are lighter boats that get up on top of the waves and run fast to the fishing grounds. The speeds these boats cruise at are needed to cover the long distances that are requried from time to time and do it efficiently. The versatility comes with the boat being able to fish all the way around in stead of just in the back offering the captain a limitless combination of fish-a-bility to show his anglers a great day on the water. Shown here is a 36 ft Yeloowfin with triple Mercury 350s. Crusing speed of 38-42 mph.
